The French Cannonball
On October 5, 1798, French troops entered Żabbar from the Biċċieni side, initially encountering no resistance. However, when they reached the crossroads near the Statue of Our Lady, the people of Żabbar and local militia stood against them. The militia and Maltese soldiers opened fire, resulting in fierce close combat. The battle lasted for about three hours, leading to significant bloodshed and the eventual retreat of the French forces to their bastion. A cannonball fired during this historic battle can still be seen embedded in a house at the beginning of Bajada Street.
