The Risen Christ Statue on Tas-Salvatur Hill: A Landmark of Gozo

Standing tall at around 320 feet (98 meters) above sea level, the Risen Christ statue is one of the most iconic landmarks of Gozo. Perched atop Tal-Merzuq Hill—locally known as Tas-Salvatur—it features a 6-meter-high figure of Christ with outstretched arms spanning the same width, as if embracing the entire island.

History and Legends

The first wooden statue of Christ was installed on the hill in 1904, replacing an earlier wooden cross. However, exposure to the elements caused it to deteriorate, leading to its replacement in the 1960s. Unfortunately, the second statue also suffered damage when its pedestal collapsed during a storm. The current statue, made from reinforced concrete, was erected in 1979 and has withstood the test of time and weather.

The hill itself is steeped in legend. One tale recounts how black smoke once rose from its summit, leading people to believe it was a volcano. Another story tells of divine punishment, where Gozo was shrouded in darkness for three days. Afterward, a ray of light—called “merżuq” in Maltese—emerged from the hill, giving it the name Tal-Merzuq.
