Tuna Farms

Tuna farms in Malta play a significant role in the country’s economy and the global fishing industry. These farms consist of large floating enclosures where bluefin tuna, one of the most valuable fish species in the world, is cultivated. The process begins with capturing young tuna in the wild, which are then transferred to the farms and fattened to the desired size.

Location: Locally, there are currently six fully licensed fish farms, as floating cages, in different locations.

Malta is a key player in this industry due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean, offering ideal conditions for tuna farming. Most of the produce is exported, particularly to Asian markets, where bluefin tuna is highly prized, especially for sushi and sashimi.

However, this industry has faced some ecological and ethical concerns. Critics highlight issues such as potential overpopulation in the farms, marine pollution from waste, and overfishing of wild tuna stocks, which could threaten the species’ sustainability. In response, Malta has implemented strict regulations and monitoring programs to minimize environmental impact and strike a balance between economic benefits and ecological responsibility.
