Villa Portelli is located on a hill leading to Villa Bighi, overlooking Kalkara Bay. It is an outstanding example of 19th-century architecture and has a rich history that reflects the development of Kalkara from a quiet fishing village to an important maritime center.

History:

In the early 19th century, Sir Agustin Portelli, the founder of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, decided to build the villa in Kalkara. His choice was influenced by a sense of insecurity in Valletta following the French blockade of 1798.

During World War II, the villa became the official residence of the Flag Officer of Malta. In 1961, it became the residence of Admiral Sir Douglas Eric Holland-Martin.

After British forces left Malta in 1979, the villa was transferred to the government of Malta.

Architecture and Gardens:

The villa is surrounded by a historic garden covering more than 5,000 square meters, which was restored through collaboration between Project Green and Heritage Malta. The gardens date back to the early Victorian era and were part of Agustin Portelli’s summer residence.

Modern Use:

Today, the villa is entrusted to Heritage Malta and serves as an exhibition and cultural center, open to the public.

Villa Portelli is a valuable cultural heritage site that reflects the multi-layered history of Malta and its maritime significance.
